Load bank for testing UPS systems
A load bank is a controllable load connected to the UPS system to load it the way it would be loaded during a power outage. The test shows whether the UPS delivers its rated power, whether the voltage remains stable and how much backup time the batteries actually provide. Testing is relevant at commissioning, periodic maintenance, battery replacement and expansions. Since tests are carried out infrequently, renting is usually more cost-effective than owning a load bank.
Consequences of an untested UPS
Battery capacity decreases with age, and faults in batteries and connections are often not discovered until the UPS has to deliver. Without testing, there is no way of knowing whether the system will hold for the time it is designed for. The result can be downtime, data loss or damage to equipment in the very situation the UPS was meant to protect against.
